History of NLP

NLP or Neuro- Linguistic Programming began in the early 1970´s with John Grindler, an assistant professor of linguistics and Richard Bandler, a student studying computer programming and psychology, what the University of California. They began quite by accident and then decided to study and model three successful therapists and founder of gestalt and Milton Erickson the world famous

Hypnotherapist . Interestingly, these three people were similar in their basic models of successful therapies.

Grindler and Bandler took these models and developed NLP in two areas. The first was a way to discover patterns of excellence or modeling and the second was effective ways of thinking and communicating.

By 1976 they decided to call these extremely effective and practical skills, techniques and processes, Neuro- Linguistic Programming. Interestingly the first known use of a similar term was by Alfred Korzybski in the 1930´s that taught `Neuro Linguistic Training.´ Originally NLP was based on psychology and now it is used in every possible area of life.

What is NLP

NLP is the study of excellence in the human experience – John Grindler

NLP is about your Experience – how you do what you do and how you create your own reality. NLP is about self-development and change. The more you know about yourself, the more you able to help others.

The name Neuro-Linguistic Programming´ comes from the three areas it brings together:

N - Neurology - The mind and how we think

L  - Linguistics - How we use language and how it affect us

P - Programming - How we sequence our actions to achieve our goals

NLP studies how we structure our subjective experience – how we think about our values and beliefs and how we create our emotional states. How we construct our internal world from our experience and give it meaning. No event has meaning it self, we give it meaning. NLP studies experience from the inside.

NLP has many useful techniques for assisting in resolving problems in any area of your everyday life. It is also the way of thinking. NLP is outcome based.
